This compact, richly illustrated, in-depth travel guide takes visitors to the many Indigenous earthwork wonders of southern Ohio, including the brilliant landscape monuments recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

John E. Hancock taught architecture, design, & history at the University of Cincinnati for 40 years. He has produced many multimedia exhibits & publications on Ohio’s earthworks. Most recently, John served as the principal author & photographer for the successful Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage nomination (2023), in collaboration with the Ohio History Connection & National Park Service. He has now re-edited & expanded that work for release from Smithsonian Books.
