Dear Library Supporters,
Ohio’s public libraries need your help! The Ohio House of Representatives has introduced their version of the proposed state budget for the next two years. If passed, this budget would eliminate the Public Library Fund and library funding would be placed into a line-item appropriation, making it more vulnerable for elimination or reduction in future state budgets. This proposed budget reduces state funding for Ohio’s public libraries by more than $100 million over the biennium as compared to Governor DeWine’s budget proposal. The proposed budget also creates a new distribution formula that would cut funding to public libraries in 39 counties, including Gallia County, on July 1.
Ohio’s public libraries are currently funded at the same level as in the year 2000 with no adjustment for inflation.
The Ohio House of Representatives will vote on this proposed state budget on Wednesday, April 9.
Public libraries across Ohio, including Bossard Memorial Library, rely on this funding to provide essential services, such as:
- Early childhood literacy programs, including Pat-a-Cake Lapsit and Story Time
- Homebound delivery services
- Outreach programming for senior citizens
- Access to books and eBooks
- Access to mobile hotspots, public computers, and the internet
- Access to enriching programming, such as traveling exhibitions, craft kits, yoga, guitar classes, book clubs, and more.
