Mr. Cole will be discussing his book The Last Adieu: Lafayette's Triumphant Return, the Echoes of Revolution, and the Gratitude of the Republic.
The book narrates when the Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the American Revolution, returned to the United States for a farewell tour. What greeted the last living major general of the Revolutionary Army was one of the grandest celebrations the young republic would ever stage.
From 1824-1825, Americans celebrated Lafayette's homecoming as he toured all twenty-four states, including a stop in Gallipolis. The book captures the tour's spectacular pageantry and emotional impact, not only from Lafayette's perspective, but through the eyewitness accounts and recollections of everyday Americans who participated in the great celebration.
Mr. Cole will offer time for questions and a book signing following his presentation. Books will be available for purchase.
Ryan Cole holds degrees in history and journalism from Indiana University. He has written extensively about American history and is the author of Light-Horse Harry Lee: The Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary Hero.
